It is important not to over load your back pack with unnecessary items you do not actually need. If you are a novice in camping and hiking, start with day adventure trips till you feel you are comfortable and skilled enough to plan a few days in wilderness parks.
Spiked soles that clamp to the soles of your boots, called crampons are required for keeping traction on the ice. As a couple who have had a great many nights under the stars, there are many essentials that we would not leave home without, starting with a tent and a flashlight for obvious reasons. Strawberries and bananas are also not good portable foods.
You can buy bulbs for your flashlight for as cheap as about six dollars. Veggies are also easy to hold and eat while hiking or sitting by the campfire. With hiking, comfort really isn t a luxury.
Never use the gas lanterns in the tent. Layers allow you to reduce or increase clothing as and when the temperatures change. If you're unsure, try a few beginners' trails in different areas and decide what you like about each and dislike.
Food should be planned depending on the duration of your stay. Campfire cooking will bring everyone together for an enjoyable evening of storytelling and great food.
