Before you set off into the woods, make sure that you have a pack prepared with food like energy bars or trail mix to keep you moving, plenty of water, dry, protected matches, a space blanket to keep you warm and to signal for help during the day, an LED flashlight or LED lantern for use at night, a compass, and the best survival knife that you can find or afford. It is important to have the correct supplies for winter camping, as this is can, at times, have a level of danger not present at other times of the year.
I'm one of those people who believe that if more people spent more time in nature, we would have many fewer problems in this world. There are places to hike in every state and it is pretty easy to find info on-line these days. Hiking not only physically stimulates you, but mentally as well.
To awaken to birds chirping and the sun rising over a misty horizon is incredible. Make sure you have appropriate boots for winter camping. To prepare for a hiking trip, sometimes I train on a bike as it uses a lot of the same muscles you use when hiking uphill.
It s always good to have a GPS unit with you so that you can avoid getting lost. Bring along a camera, binoculars and a magnifying glass on your camping and hiking trips as their will be lots to see. If you are just taking an overnight in a place that is easy to get to, mild, and close to civilization, most things won't matter.
Sit back in your folding chair and watch the squirrels jump from branch to branch. Maybe it's time you took a gander at the modern family camping tents and supplies.
